City 2 in Brussels completely renewed

After a major renovation of more than two years, the Brussels shopping centre City 2 officially reopened its doors at the end of September. City 2 is located between Nieuwstraat/Rue Neuve and the Rogier metro station and receives 40,000 visitors every day.

In cooperation with BPC (Amart) and CIT Blaton, Valens was responsible for various renovation works. These include the partial reconstruction of the car parks, the widening of the entrance between the shopping centre and the metro and the construction of the pedestrian bridge between City 2 and the Inno store. The construction of a new atrium and the renovation of the two existing atria were also planned to ensure a maximum of natural light. One of the biggest challenges of this project was planning the works. Because the shopping centre had to stay open all this time, work was often done at night to prevent noise and dust pollution. In 2020, the facades will also be tackled.

What started with the installation of two bathrooms and a number of hydrant cabinets has developed into the complete furnishing of the food court and the stages on the upper floors over the course of the project. The adapted materials and working methods were developed in a construction team during the first weeks, after which the manufacture of the furniture, metalwork and upholstery were completed in an extremely short period of three working weeks. Three weeks were also reserved for the final installation of the furniture, soft floors and electronics. Thanks to the good cooperation with all those involved, the proposed date of commissioning of 1 July was successfully achieved.
