The temporary joint venture Yvan Paque – VSE – Valens – Clemessy – Collignon – Eiffage Energie Systèmes, entirely under the colours of Eiffage, completed the work on the Hallepoort/Porte de Hal tunnel in Brussels after a renovation lasting almost two years and requiring a total investment of €32 million. This is the first smart tunnel in Europe that can be operated remotely, with a great deal of attention being paid to fire safety.
The entire waterproofing was rejigged, two additional emergency exits were created and the design was also given a major facelift. All the lighting in the tunnel was also renovated and the whole ventilation system was replaced. In this way, the Hallepoort/Porte de Hal tunnel is the first tunnel in the Brussels region to meet the highest safety standards in full.
The Hallepoort/Porte de Hal tunnel is also a first in artistic terms: “This is the first time that an artistic intervention like this has ever been seen in a tunnel in Brussels. Motorists driving through the tunnel at a speed of 50 km/h will therefore be able to enjoy the new design to the full,” says Brussels Minister of Mobility and Public Works Pascal Smet.
